Um ... where is the data that led to this plot? The size of the "Hispanic" label should encompass at least part of the Mexican label, and clearly Mexicans vary greatly in the degrees of their European (coloniales / peninsulares) and American parentage (mestizos / indigena).

I just looked at the original paper's abstract here: http://www.nature.com/ng/journal/v36/n11s/full/ng1440.html.


It says they sampled: " African Americans from Washington, DC; African Caribbeans living in England; Puerto Ricans from New York; Mexicans from Guerrero; and Hispanics from San Luis Valley "

The graphic makes a much wider claim than this. Nuevorriquenos are not synonymous with "Puerto Ricans"; nor are Guerrerrenses synonymous with "Mexicans".
