Summary

Description
English: Cathedral of Christ's Resurrection ([Church of the] "Savior on the Blood") (2a Griboyedov Canal Embankment, St. Petersburg, Russia). Built on the spot of March 1,1881 assassination of Russian Emperor Alexander II the Liberator by members of a Russian revolutionary terrorist organization People's Will, the last and the only successful attempt on his life in a long series. The emperor had issued a famous manifesto of February 19, 1861, prescribing landowners to emancipate their serfs, and ordinary people were grateful for receiving personal freedom, collecting the money for this church. People's Will and other radical reform groups saw the emancipation as insufficient because former serfs did not immediately receive together with freedom their means of production - land plots, and had to accumulate big money to buy the land out, which enraged revolutionaries
