Description
Polski: Zdjęcie opublikowane w roku 2008 w reportażu pt. Gorączka złota w Treblince autorstwa Marcina Kowalskiego i Piotra Głuchowskiego, reporterów „Dużego Formatu” „Gazety”.

English: This historic photograph has been reprinted in 2008 in an article titled Gorączka złota w Treblince (Gold rush in Treblinka) by Marcin Kowalski and Piotr Głuchowski, two journalists of Gazeta. They received a copy of it from Tadeusz Kiryluk, the former director of the Jewish Martyrdom Museum in Treblinka. According to him, the photo depicts the so-called "diggers" caught red-handed by the militia, a group of local people who looked for gold buried along with the remains of Jewish victims murdered by the Nazis in KL Treblinka. This photo inspired Jan T. Gross to write his book "Golden Harvest" (published 2011). However, the hostile interpretation of what the photograph depicts has become the subject of heated debate. According to researchers Paweł Majewski and Michał Reszka and others, the photograph shows well-meaning local citizens sent in to beautify the grounds, exactly the opposite of what is being claimed by Gross; which can be confirmed by its timing.
