s «! 3 m Q o a O u % O tu, PSAMMOPHIS SCHOKAKf. 295 PSAMMOPHIS. Psammophis, Boie, Isis, 1827, p. 521. Body elongate and cylindrical; tail long and tapered. Head distinct from the neck ;snout moderately long; loreal region more or less concave ; nostril between two orthree plates (rarely a semidivided shield); frontal narrow and rather elongate; lorealelongate; pupil round. Dorsal scales smooth, with apical pits, in 11 to 19 more orless oblique rows; ventrals rounded; anal divided or single. Maxillary teeth in threegroups, those of the anterior group, 3 or 4 in number, separated by an interspacefrom one or two long fang-like teeth, followed by another interspace, the last groupterminating in one or two long, strong, grooved fangs placed below the posterior borderof the eye; mandibular teeth much enlarged anteriorly, followed by a long line ofmuch smaller teeth, gradually diminishing in size posteriorly.
