Summary

Description

Gravestone of the parents of British sculptor William Ingle (1828-1870). The parents are Robert Ingle (1799-1860) and Elizabeth Ingle (1802-1845). The gravestone also commemorates Ingle's sister Sarah who died 15 April 1848, aged 10 years, and Ingle's brother Francis who died 24 November 1863 aged 23 years.

The gravestone is carved with ivy and oak, which in contemporary religious terms represented faith and steadfastness respectively. Although Ingle could have carved the stone, it is not undercut in his manner of 1860, so it is possible that it is the work of John Wormald Appleyard, his neighbour and monumental mason.
