English: Watercolor and gum arabic on paper, with scratching out
6 3/4 X 4 3/4 in., 17.5 X 12 cm. inscribed on label attached to the backboard, "Old William Hunt/The pet of the village/engraved. This small watercolor of a young girl might be considered a bit mean-spirited by modern viewers. It is noteworthy, however, for accounts in contemporary reviews of the 1852 Spring Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours that it caused Queen Victoria, on an official visit to the exhibition, to burst into laughter. It is also one of the few late figure paintings by Hunt, who had by this time turned to almost exclusively painting his detailed still life watercolors, which were in greater demand and commanded higher prices. |
