Summary

Description
English: Watercolor, bodycolor, and gum arabic on paper, with scratching out.

11 X 7 inches, 27.94 X 17.78 cm. Signed and dated, l.r., W. HUNT 1830

This watercolor remained in one collection and unseen by the general public from the time it was purchased out of the 1830 Spring Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours until it was sold at auction in 1984. It is one of the first watercolors by William Henry Hunt which depicts the artist's favorite model, John Swain. It is typical of a Hunt watercolor from the beginning of his mature style. Instead of areas defined through ink outlines filled with broad washes of color, as seen in the artist's earliest style, the figure is built up through fine, gradually modulated stippling with significant use of scratching of the paper's surface to increase the three dimensionality of the image and to show highlights. The artist signed the watercolor W. HUNT, the form of signature he used from this point forward, as opposed to Wm. Hunt, as he had used until the late 1820s.
