DescriptionWhirlwind vase - Suzanne Lalique (38742976635).jpg |
Glass bowl on display as part of the "Jazz Age" exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. Suzanne Lalique (1892-1989) was the daughter of René Lalique (1860-1945), the famous Parisian jeweler and art glass maker. Her father and her grandfather, French sculptor Auguste Ledru (1860-1902), fostered a love of art in her, and often asked her to assist them with projects. She began designing At the age of 18, Suzanne Lalique began designing candy dishes, decorative screens, powder boxes, wallpaper, and other decorative objects. For a time, she even designed porcelain for Sèvres. In the 1920s, she began designing and working in glass for her father's glass firm, Lalique. Although she designed a great many items, she mostly worked on vases and bowls. The name Lalique was Art Deco in France, even though many items attributed to René Lalique were actually designed by Suzanne. She married photographer Paul Burty-Haviland in 1917. Her father-in-law, the great French porcelain manufacturer William Haviland, asked her to design pieces for Limoges. Exhibited at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs Industriels et Modernes in Paris in 1925, her work became an international sensation. In 1937, Suzanne Lalique-Haviland was commissioned to design the scenery for the Comédie Française. She abandoned decorative arts for stage and costume design, a field in which she worked into the 1970s. This vase, named "Tourbillons" (Whirlwind), is of pressed, carved, acid-etched, and enameled glass. Exhibited at the Paris exposition in 1925, it won widespread critical acclaim.
