Summary

Description

Cantigny is a 35-room mansion built in a private park in Wheaton in 1896-1897, by Joseph Medill (1823-1899). Medill became editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune in 1855, and turned it into Chicago's leading newspaper. Cantigny was inherited by Col. Robert R. McCormick (1880-1955), Medill's grandson, who was publisher of the Chicago Tribune for around 50 years. Col. McCormick left his fortune to a charitable foundation, with instructions to turn the estate into a public park.

Unlike some public figures who use the title, McCormick was a colonel in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was in the battle of Cantigny in France, and named the estate for the battle, after the war.
