English: Waitangiroto Nature Reserve, near Whataroa on the West Coast of New Zealand, is the only nesting colony of the white heron / kōtuku (Ardea alba modesta) in the country. The reserve is closed to the general public and tours are run by White Heron Sanctuary Tours of Whataroa. Visitors take a minibus across farmland and walk through kahikatea forest to a hide from which they can observe the nesting colony from September to February.
