Summary

Description

Contemporary Biographies, by W.T. Pike, including "London at the opening of the Twentieth Century". (Pike's New Century Series no.15). Published in 1905 by W.T. Pike & Co., 19 Grand Parade, Brighton.

The volumes in this series each contain an illustrated section about the county, followed by a list of short biographies (each with a photographic portrait) of men of the county who were alive at the time of publication (plus a few who had recently died). Each volume has an index to the illustrations of buildings and views of the county, and an index to the biographies. The London volume was available to subscribers as sections of the whole: this section covers bureaucrats: actuaries and insurance, accountants, and secretaries.

Showing a photograph titled: Council Chamber, Westminster City Hall. Architect J. Murray, A.R.I.B.A. This is possibly John Murray (1864–1940). The building is an extension of Westminster Hall, completed in 1902. It is the Old Westminster City Hall, now repurposed and called Cavell House.
