Description |
English: "A view of the Passeio Público" (1856), by Leonel Marques Pereira. The painter depicted a group of elegant characters, assembled in two rows, walking through the Passeio Público park, in Lisbon, Portugal. The group is the center of the composition and is arranged in what seems to be an elongated V shape that heightens the perspective. In the center of the group, the figure of King Ferdinand II stands out from the others, tall, lean and elegant, wearing a brown morning coat, white trousers and a tall hat. Next to the central character, wearing military uniform, the King's aide-de-camp, the Count of Campanhã; the other two male figures around these central characters are Almeida Garrett and the Marquis of Ávila e Bolama. All of the figures are surrounded by a thoroughly green environment that reminds the country depictions of Watteau. The King greets the ladies and the assembled gentlemen uncover their heads, their greeting being elegantly returned. The gentlemen are also in morning dress, top hats and tight trousers. The ladies wear a set of colourful dresses and ample skirts, over petticoats and crinolines. Capes, hats and parasols are natural complements of the toilette. The surrounding natural environment was treated by the artist with large detail, be that in colour or shape, which allows us to identity some species of the trees, such as a banana-tree on the left side of the observer, and the willows in the background. Also in the background, one can glimpse the ruins of the Carmo Convent and the buildings around the Rossio Square. |
