Toolik Lake Research Natural Area, Alaska
Toolik Lake RNA was designated in 1990 as an Area of Critical Concern (ACEC) to protect a natural lake and tundra biome in the foothills of the Brook Range on Alaska's North Slope. The Toolik Lake area has been extensively used for arctic natural resources research since the 1970s. Today researchers come from all over the world to conduct cutting-edge research in all aspects of arctic biology, geology, chemistry, and more. The Toolik Field Station, located within the ACEC and operated by the University of Alaska, provides researchers with lodging, laboratories, and logistical support.
