DescriptionTicket for Blundell's School Feast by William Hogarth.jpg
English: Ticket for Blundell's School Feast, Tiverton, Devon, by William Hogarth (1740). The drawing of the old school building is so inaccurate that the Tiverton Historian Martin Dunsford wrote: "The celebrated Hogarth in the year 1740, engraved a plate for the tickets of this dinner. It is by no means one of his happiest efforts. He appears never to have seen the school". (Dunsford, Martin, Historical Memoirs of the Town and Parish of Tiverton, Book III, Public Donations, p.45, footnote[1]). The dinner was an annual event, described by Dunsford as follows: (Dunsford, p.45)
"The last Wednesday in August is kept as an anniversary day. A procession is formed for the purpose of proceeding to St. Peter's Church, where a sermon is preached on the occasion, generally by some clergyman who has been educated at the school. The order of the procession is: the porter, in his gown and bearing a pole; the boys two and two, the juniors first; the band; the masters of the school; gentlemen who have been educated at the school; any of the trustees who are pleased to attend; the preacher; the stewards of the day. They proceed to the church through Bampton Street and Newport Street, and return through Peter Street and Fore Street. The gentlemen afterwards dine together, and the evening is closed with a ball. This procession was revived in 1790, after being discontinued for more than 30 years".
