Description |
Painting, Portrait of New York (detail), industrial sign paint on plywood, 1989/1991, Originally installed at Manhattan Municipal Building (now David Dinkins Municipal Building) New York City, NY, by Thomas Lawson. The installation view of a detail of Thomas Lawson’s public art work illustrates a major shift in his work and theory from painting and gallery exhibits to (primarily) outdoor public art projects during the period 1987-1996. This work was publicly exhibited in New York for five years and was reviewed and discussed extensively in major art journals and daily press publications, as was the theoretical shift. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key shift in Lawson’s work and theory from painting and gallery exhibits to (primarily) outdoor public art projects, a shift paralleled in the segments of the art world of the 1990s. These works produced meta-critical dissection of public monuments and architecture and the values and processes of power inscribed within them by re-purposing imagery drawn from local civic statuary in pointed ways. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key developmental phase in his work and its impact. Lawson’s work of this type and this work in particular is discussed extensively in the article and by critics cited in the article, as is its place in art history. |
Replaceable? |
There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Thomas Lawson, and the work no longer is viewable, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image. |
Other information |
The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made. |
