Summary

Description
English: The steam ferry SS Toroa on the Waitematā harbour, Auckland. The Toroa was built in 1925 by G. Niccol, and was a double-ended ferry with a triple expansion steam engine. She had four crew and could carry over one thousand passengers. A sister vessel to the Albatross, she was originally used on the Devonport run for the Devonport Steam Ferry Company. In 1960 she began sailing for the North Shore Ferries, and from 1964 until her decommisioning in 1980 was used as needed on the Waiheke run. She is now owned by the Toroa Preservation Society and is awaiting restoration. Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections T0470
