About one oclock on the 2 2d of May, the asthmaticold steam-tug that was to be our escort to the seamoved slowly off. Our adieux from the Navy Yardwere silent enough. We cost our country no compli-mentary gunpowder; and it was not until we gotabreast of the city that the crowded wharves andshipping showed how much that bigger communitysympathized with our undertaking. Cheers and hur-ras followed us till we had passed the Battery, andthe ferry-boats and steamers came out of their trackto salute us in the bay. The sky was overcast before we lost sight of thespire of old Trinity; and by evening it had cloudedover so rapidly, that it was evident we had to look fora dirty night outside.
