To illustrate three aspects of a poignant scene in the episode:

• The makeup for the character of the Great Mutato was designed and created by Special Effects supervisor Tony Lindala. The Mutato mask went through several design iterations on paper, including 10–15 drawings and a color rendition. This is expanded upon in the "Filming" section of the parent article.
• The episode was filmed in a unique style for the series. The episode was filmed in black-and-white, in a stylistic nod to the 1931 film Frankenstein. This is expanded upon in the "Filming" section of the parent article.
• The nature of the final scene (Mulder and Scully and the monster going to a Cher concert) was critically examined by several third-party reviewers, who debated whether or not the event was a canonical occurrence in the show.
