Site of the Prebendary House of the Kirk of Fields, in whichDarnley and his servant were murdered in 1567. To thishouse there was a doorway in the City wall, through whichthe bodies were carried to the field beyond. The housewas totally destroyed by the explosion. h. Site of Hospital of Kirk of Fields, destroyed by the Englishin 1544. It was feued to the Duke of Chatelherault on30th August 1554, and then became known as HamiltonHouse. (MS. Charter in City Chambers). The road from the EXPLANATORY NOTES. Cowgate by the Black Friary to the Kirk of Fields terminated atthis house. On the night of the murder of Darnley the bags ofgunpowder were handed over to his murderers at the Blackfriary gate,whence they were carried up this road to the Prebendary House.c.
