Taino Almestica, the first man to completely circumnavigate the island of Puerto Rico in sea kayak August 26, 2007 Levittown, Puerto Rico

On August 26, 2007 Taino Almestica of Aibonito, Puerto Rico became the first man to completely circumnavigate the island of Puerto Rico in a sea kayak. Taino Almestica lives in Long Island New York, but chose Puerto Rico as his first sea kayak expedition. The expedition took 18 days to complete and Almestica was forced off the water for a few days due to passing Hurricane Dean. School Children José Estefan Medina(10th grade), Joaquin Espina(4th grade), Maria Monserrate Medina (9th grade), and Francisco Medina(9th grade) participated in this historic event as ground support crew members. José Medina took a small leg of this expedition with Almestica while his paddling partner was off the water.

The kayak used by Almestica has been donated to the Puerto Rican people to inspire the youth of Puerto Rico to achieve great things.
