There have been no cancel-lation orders turned in from steel mills. Stanlej E. Elian, MP., Has Been Ap-pointed Director of the UnionBank STANLEY E. ELKIN, M.P., mana-ger of the Maritime Nail Company,St. John, N.B., who has beenelected a director of the Union Bank ofCanada, is only ■>.) years old.• Beginning his business career when heleft high school in an insurance office.Mr. Elkin soon afterwards became pur-chasing agent for the Ltominion Iron andSteel Company in Sydney. His nextmove was to Chicago, where he becameassistant to the vice-president of the Am-erican Glue Company, during this periodalso acting a? representative of a syndi-cate of New York bankers in Mexico.

Among his other activities are the fol-lowing: President, Motor Car & Equip-ment Co., Ltd., St. John; vice-president,Wilson Box Co., Ltd., Fairville, N.B.;vice-president, Canada Nail & Wire Co.,Ltd., West St. John; director, Nova ScotiaTrust Company, Halifox; president, Rod-stan & Co., London, England, and partner,St. Martins Shipbuilding Co., St Martins,N.B. Although entering the House of Com-mons only at the last general electionshe was selected as one of the membersof the commission to Washington to in-vestigate the U.S. war organization andmake recommendations to the CanadianGovernment. It is the busy man often who finds timeto do things, and during the recent Vic-tory Loan campaign Mr. Elkin was theenergetic head of the committee for St.John city and county, which rolled up a50 per cent, surplus over its allotment. 26 CA NA DI A N MACHINERY Volume XXI FURNA
