Summary

Description
English: St Pantalus under a Renaissance Portico, design for a stained glass window. Pen and ink and brush over preliminary chalk drawing, grey wash, 54.1 × 37.2 cm, Kunstmuseum Basel. St Pantalus was the legendary first bishop of Basel. According to tradition, he was martyred with St Ursula and her followers at Cologne. He holds a palm frond, symbolising his martyrdom (Müller, 228). Holbein later incorporated St Pantalus in a design for the organ shutters of Basel Cathedral.
