English: St Michael's Hospital (closed) - south elevation The hospital has recently been closed and its clinics were replaced by community services. Most of the older buildings will be converted to private housing. To the front of the former hospital building an area encompassing 3.1 hectares of green open space will be retained. St Michael's was built by the architect Donthorn in 1848/9 and originally was a Union workhouse for 'aged men, aged women and idiots'.
