DescriptionSt Andrew's church - view east - geograph.org.uk - 1634070.jpg
English: St Andrew's church - view east. St Andrew's > 1634049 is the only one of three churches in the village which is still in use. St Mary's church > 1634138 - a couple of hundred metres further to the west - became redundant in 1976 and is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. No traces remain of All Saints church > 1634114 which was situated across the road from St Andrew's. Tower and chancel of St Andrew's church were built in the 14th century, whereas the inner doorway > 1634066 dates from around 1200 and shows a merging of Norman and Gothic styles. The porch > 1634065 with its elaborate flushwork, depicting saltire crosses, was added in the 15th century. The church was restored in the 19th century and the stained glass windows > 1634080 date from that time. There are 17th century box pews on the north wall, one of them with the date 1623 carved into the door > 1634089. The simple octagonal baptismal font is C15 > 1634108. Of particular interest is the chancel > 1634076 floor in that it has retained the complete set of original 4 inch square medieval tiles, decorated with varying patterns > 1634092. And even rarer still is the 14th century piscina > 1634098 with a double drain in the floor below it, which was probably in use during the 13th century when the ritual called for piscinae with two drains. There is no other known example of this combination of two drains in the floor and one in the wall.
