DescriptionSouth Australian Railways A class locomotive (R Stephenson & Co builder's photo)(BAA-08357).jpg
English: South Australian Railways A class locomotive, delivered in 1868, at the factory of Robert Stephenson and Company, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
This is a builder's photo taken by the company and provided to the South Australian Railways as the customer – shown by the signature of H.C. Mais, Engineer in Chief of the South Australian Government. Such photos were taken in front of a large canvas to exclude extraneous details, and in the best light available, since photography was in its infancy and gradations of grey were limited. In this case, getting the exposure right for the wheels and other undergear led to the upper half of the locomotive being over-exposed, losing some detail there. An employee used a very sharp pencil to "touch up" these areas. In this drawing the top of the firebox where it joins the boiler, and the levers on the Salter safety valve, have not been drawn well.
