Topping, Robert W (1988). A Century and Beyond: The History of Purdue University (JP2). Purdue University Press. p. 167. ISBN 0-911198-95-4. In 1913, the Indiana state legislature appropriated $125,000 for lands for the experiment station and agriculture school, $30,000 for new greenhouses, and $28,000 for equipping Smith Hall for the dairy husbandry and dairy manufacture programs. Smith Hall itself was built with a bequest from William C. Smith of Williamsport, Indiana.
