Description Shield of Pedro Betancourt

On July 1, 2001, the centenary of the name change of the municipality of Corral Falso de Macuriges was commemorated for that of Pedro Betancourt, a tribute to Major General of the Liberation Army Pedro Estanislao Betancourt Dávalos.

In correspondence with the plan of activities foreseen since the year 2000, directed by the AMPP and expressly by decision of its President José Roberto Peña Luis, the call for the election of the shield and the symbol of the municipality was issued.

The ¨Gustavo González Pérez¨ Municipal Museum was in charge of receiving the projects in the two categories: symbols and shields.

On December 18, 2000, as part of the celebration of the 23rd Week of Culture, a prestigious jury chaired by the outstanding Matanzas researcher Urbano Martínez Carmenate, also made up of the Spanish painter Marina Iborra Fernández, from the city of Alicante, who was in a traveling exhibition through the province of Matanzas, Julián Rogelio Álvarez López, museologist and historian of the municipality, María Teresa García Souza, Director of the Museum and Nereida Caridad Cárdenas Pumariega, Editor-reporter of the Rado 26 Provincial Station.

From the selection among all the projects, more than 25 presented, the award-winning shield project corresponded to José Antonio Espinosa Ibáñez. The shield is in the shape of a head of beef, then considering cattle ranching as the most important economic activity in the territory, the upper part a flat land characteristic of the area and above this a rainbow that means development and the machete that our mambises brandished in the pro-independence deeds against the Spanish colonial yoke. Below, the outline of the municipality map on a surface that on the left shows the flag of Carlos Manel de Céspedes and our national flag, on the right a land planted with cane as an economic activity that characterized for many years the most significant source of wealth Of the territory.
