Description |
Photographic print by Sheila Pinkel, Grand Glory (Light Works) (Luminous gelatin silver paper, 48" x 96", 1978-82. Collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art). The image illustrates an early period and body of work in Sheila Pinkel's career beginning in the 1970s, when she produced several series of experimental cameraless photographic works using a wide range of imaging processes and technologies she termed "Light Works." Grand Glory represents her "Folded Paper" photogram series (1974–82), in which she applied her understanding of sculpture to two-dimensional forms, exposing shaped and folded photographic paper, which after being developed and unfolded, resulted in a flat, abstract two-dimensional recording of a three-dimensional image. This series of work has been publicly exhibited in prominent venues, discussed widely in national art and daily press publications, and collected by major art institutions. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating an early period and body of work in Sheila Pinkel's career that began in the 1970s: her experimental cameraless photography, which used diverse imaging processes and technologies to explore in abstract inquiries into the potential of form revealed by light. These experimentations comprise her "Light Works" and include several series and techniques, including "Folded Paper" photograms (1974–82), the "Manifestations of a Cube" series (1974–9), cyanotypes, xeroradiographs, and video. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize a key developmental phase in her art, which brought her early and ongoing recognition from art journals, daily press publications, and museums. Pinkel's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article. |
Replaceable? |

Other information |
The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made. |
