Scribner j^ersevered in publishingThe Eeveries of a Bachelor (1850) andDream Life (1851), by Donald G. Mit-chell, though his Battle Summer (1849)had not been a success, he began to showbeyond mistake the discrimination and faithin his judgments which mark the first rankin his profession. There is certainly noneed now, either on commercial or literarygrounds, to justify these two selections.Still more characteristically discriminatingwas his attaching to his growing list thebooks of Dr. Holland, beginning in 1858 withTimothy Titcombs Letter;:. For a longseries of years Dr. Hollands successive works,with their aggregate sales of many hundredsof thousands, proved the soundness of ^Ir.Scribners judgment ; while Dr. Hollandsown repeated testimony to the justice andwisdom of his publisher tlirough all this timehas been an especially pleasant memory tothe house.
