Summary

Description
English: Two-panel cartoon in Ghimpele, the Romanian liberal magazine. Published at the peak of a biannual liberal regime, it satirizes the conservative opposition, represented here by its Moldavian speaker, Petre P. Carp. Carp had recently taken a stand in defense of core conservative policies: 1) defending the status-quo in Eastern Europe, against Balkan guerillas discreetly supported by the liberals in Bucharest; 2) promoting Jewish emancipation, against the antisemitic nationalism of liberal leaders.
Left panel, titled Jucâriile domnuluĭ Carpŭ ("Mr. Carp's Toys"): Jatâ ce ințelege D. Carpŭ prîn bande armate - care cutreerŭ magad̦inele de jucâriĭ. ("This is what Mr. Carp will claim are armed gangs — those roaming through the toy stores"). A flat denial of Carp's talk about Balkan guerillas present on Romanian soil.
Right panel: an imaginary dialogue between Carp and a stereotypical Jewish man, his creditor (or usurer). Carp: — Ved̦ĭ tu dragă Jțic câ numaĭ noĭ boeriĭ vé apârâm? sâ nu cerĭ și tu dobĕnd̦ĭ marĭ ("— Do you see, my dear Izak, that only we aristocrats are defending you people? Don't you go charging us with high interest rates"). Izak: — Dobĕndâ, kikóne sâ ia tot una dupĕ capetele; și unde capete sunt slabe ca la D-vóstrâ și dobĕndâ e slabă ("— The interest rate, sire, that is charged different for each head; and where the head is feeble, as yours is, that rate is also feeble").
