The great tank at Haidarabad, in the Deklian, would be readily taken inAmerica for a natural lake. CHAPTER VIII. ANIMAL AND VEGETABLE LIFE—MINERALS. India comprises all climates. The uplands along the base ofthe Himalayas remind one of the temperate regions of Europeand the United States, while the southern part of the peninsulais as thoroughly tropical and luxuriant as the West Indies or theMolucca Islands. The animal life derives its varied forms fromthe many Indian climates. In Zerai and Assam the elephant stillruns wild.* The dense jungles are their favorite home.
