Since the Lake Washington Ship Canal was opened, lowering the level of Lake Washington, the Black River is little more than a stream and storm drainage.
This station pumps water up from what is now effectively a large pond and swamp to just above the level of the Green and Duwamish Rivers, allowing that water to enter the Green River at the historic junction with the Black River. Below that junction it is considered the Duwamish River.
The plant was built in the 1970s for the Green River Flood Control Zone District. At the end of 2007, the Green River Flood Control Zone District was merged into the King County Flood Control Zone District. (KCFCZD)
