English: Place: Zhaoxing, Liping County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province
Chinese name: 观致5 SUV (guānzhì 5 SUV)
Year of launch: 2015
Qoros was founded as CQAC as a joint venture between Chinese carmaker Chery and Israeli company Kenon Holdings in December 2007 and was renamed Qoros in 2011. Qoros launched its first product at the Geneva Motor Show 2013: the 3 sedan, hatchback and Estate.
It's one of the most ambitious Chinese carmakers ever, with the 3 being designed by Gert Hildebrand, the German former design chief of Mini and partners like Magna Steyr, Getrag, TRW, Continental, Bosch, Microsoft and Iconmobile. Qoros had plans to conquer the European market and it was the first Chinese car to receive five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The Qoros 3 was the safest car tested by Euro NCAP in 2013. Qoros started its European operations in Slovakia as a trial.
Sadly Qoros can be considered one of the biggest commercial failures in Chinese car history. The sales in China were extremely disappointing, with Qoros selling only 6,867 units of the 3 and 3 City SUV in 2014, 14,247 in 2015 and 13,310 in 2016. Qoros halted its European ambitions and left the Slovakian market, to fully concentrate on its home market.
It launched its first SUV at the end of 2015, which should have had a lot of potential in the Chinese market, considering China's hunger for midsize SUVs, but sales of the 5 SUV are even more disappointing with 10,878 untits in 2016. Meanwhile Borgward sold almost 50,000 units of the BX7 in the past twelve months.
