DescriptionProperties of the Chevy Chase Land Company.jpg
English: The dark-shaded areas indicate property in Washington, D.C., and suburban Maryland owned in 1897 by the Chevy Chase Land Company. Founded in 1890 by U.S. Rep. Francis Newlands, the firm created Connecticut Avenue and the Chevy Chase communities of Maryland and D.C. The map also shows the Rock Creek Railway, a streetcar line laid by the Company from the Dupont Circle area to the planned Maryland suburbs. Many of the streets depicted in northwest D.C. did not yet exist. The map was distributed by Thomas J. Fisher & Co. a real-estate brokerage.
The map was created for real-estate brokers Thos. J. Fisher and Co. as marketing material as part of a brochure that also included an advertisement for R.O. Holtzman, a real estate and insurance broker.
It was preserved as a 7.5-by-9-inch printed map, mounted on fabric. It was reproduced in: "Greater Washington, the Nation's City Viewed from the Material Standpoint," by Alexander Dwight Anderson (Hartman and Cadick, 1897). The digitized version of this map was posted by the DC Library, the public library system of Washington, D.C., held in The People's Archive of the Washingtoniana Map Collection.
Among the Washington, D.C., neighborhoods where Chevy Chase Land Company owned property were Chevy Chase, Friendship Heights, Tenleytown, Wakefield, Forest Hills, North Cleveland Park, Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, Massachusetts Heights, Woodland-Normanstone Terrace. The company also owned land in what would become Chevy Chase, Maryland.
