Summary

Description The Promontory Apartments in Chicago (1949). It was designed in 1949 by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, and was the first International Style skyscraper in the world. It was the first high-rise structure for Mies, who would go on to become one of the most acclaimed skyscraper designers of all time. The apartments were a symbolic victory for Chicago, as the building was the first skyscraper since the Great Depression. A young architect names Charles B. Genther was originally slated to design the building, but his high praise for his mentor at the Illinois Institute of Technology convinced the developer to get Mies involved.
