San Lazzaro degli Armeni est une petite île de la lagune de Venise, très proche du Lido. Elle est occupée par un monastère de l'ordre des Mékhitaristes depuis 1717. Le monastère comprend une bibliothèque de 200.000 volumes et manuscrits, un musée, une église, un cloître, des jardins et divers bâtiments. Ordre religieux arménien catholique fondé à Constantinople en 1700, établi en 1703 en Morée (Grèce) alors sous domination vénitienne par l’abbé Mekhitar de Sebaste (auj. Sivas) (1676 Sebaste-1749 Venise). En 1715, les mékhitaristes s’exilent à la suite de la conquête turque et s’établissent à Venise où, en 1717, la République sérénissime leur offre résidence sur l’île de San Lazzaro. De règle bénédictine, Mekhitar s’applique à donner à ses disciples un haut niveau d’éducation, portant une attention particulière au riche héritage culturel arménien. Il développe une intense activité d’édition. La branche autrichienne de l’Ordre reconnue à Trieste en 1773, puis déplacée à Vienne (Autriche) par Napoléon en 1810 est également dotée d’une maison d’édition. En 2000, Venise et Vienne ont fusionné, coïncidant avec le 300e anniversaire de l’Ordre, le 2000e anniversaire du christianisme et le 1700e anniversaire de l’adoption du christianisme par l’Arménie comme religion d’Etat. voir aussi le site sur les diasporas arméniennes www.armeniens.culture.fr |
