DescriptionPlaner Table Depression Recorded by Dial Indicator 000.svg
English: This graph records the vertical movement of the table as a workpiece passes through a thickness planer. Measurement is with a dial indicator placed under the table below the center of the cutter head. A video recording was made and the dial indicator reading in successive frames was entered into a spreadsheet program to produce the graph. The transitions from the sniped sections at the beginning and end of the run to the main part of the workpiece can be clearly seen (at C and D). The upward movement of the table in the middle of the workpiece is not explained but may be related to how the stiffness of the wood distributes the downward force more evenly between the table supports at the infeed and outfeed ends. This requires more study. The experiment was intended to demonstrate the cause of snipe.
