Summary

Description

pinyon gilia, Gilia ophthalmoides, California, White Mountains, Deep Springs Valley drainage, elevation 1821 m (5975 ft).

This common species is found across the southern Great Basin and northern Mojave Desert eastward to the Colorado Plateau, from eastern California to Colorado and Arizona, in dry rocky soils mostly in the pinyon-juniper zone at 1100-2600 meters (3600-8500 feet) elevation.

Smaller forms of this species (like this one) are similar to Gilia clokeyi (posted earlier from nearby). Gilia ophthalmoides differs by having longer flowers with purple tubes, narrower solid-yellow throats, and pink lobes; longer calyx lobes with long-tapered red tips; and narrower fruit shorter than the calyx.

Will resume posting in about 3 weeks.
