Conservative percentages were derived from the sum of "Faith and Flag Conservatives", "Committed Conservatives", "Populist Right", and "Ambivalent Right" opinions, weighted in proportion of the sample size of each typology. Liberal percentages were derived from the sum of "Outsider Left", "Democratic Mainstays", "Establishment Liberals", and "Progressive Left" opinions, weighted in proportion of sample size of each typology. Sample sizes were found in Appendix A of the survey report.
For example, "Faith and Flag Conservatives" made up 1325 out of the 4403 conservative respondents, so the "Faith and Flag Conservatives" opinion was multiplied by this fraction before being added to the total, and likewise for all other groups. "Stressed Sideliners" were not included as they are aligned with neither liberals nor conservatives, and their sample size was not sufficient to warrant its own category.
