English: This photo was taken in June 1989, two years before the collapse of the Soviet Union. President Mikhail Gorbachev had instituted reforms of "glasnost" and "perestroika", which saw a huge easing of tensions between the Soviet Union and the West. I was in Moscow and Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) on a seven-day holiday during this period, and able to travel around both cities freely. There were peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations taking place, Greenpeace held a concert and were selling tapes of it, and a group of peace dancers from the UK, US and Canada went to Moscow and performed dances within the area of the Kremlin.
