English: 1596 Parish Church of St. Catherine of Siena (Samal 2113 Bataan, Philippines) Pop.: 16,741 Cath.: 11,581 Titular: St. Catherine of Siena, April 30 Parish Priest: Monsignor Edilfredo Cruz[1]Vicariate of St. Dominic de Guzman[2] The spiritual ministration of Samal was entrusted to the Dominicans in 1596. The town was attacked by Dutch invaders in April 1647 but the local garrison of Pampanga under the command of Alejo Aguas compelled the Dutch forces to retreat. The church and the convent built by the Rev. Jeromino Belen, O.P. were ruined during the Dutch invasion. In 1896 the church was burned by the Katipuneros to drive out their enemies in the convent. The Rev. Justo Quesada rebuilt the church and convent in 1903. It belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Balanga[3][4][5][6] (Dioecesis Balangensis) Suffragan of San Fernando, Pampanga Created: March 17, 1975. Canonically Erected: November 7, 1975.
