Notes |
Clark 1992 In three separate fragments from a handscroll, now remounted together, a workman displays his sexual prowess and the gigantic size of his member in a variety of challenging situations. The text is generally crude and jocular ('mine's the biggest in all Japan!'). The scene depicted shows him piercing a stack of (?)roof tiles ('Ow! Let's show you I can stick it through these'); and otherwise he is seen making love five times a night to a voracious woman, with his phallus resting on a festival cart pulled by two naked women, shattering a metal cauldron, and with a child swinging on Uncle's 'thing'. Phallic worship was an ancient and important part of Shinto and folk belief, and there are comic works from the Edo period in this tradition (Suntory Museum of Art (eds), 'Nihon no giga', exh. cat., Tokyo, 1986, nos 101, 102). The style here suggests a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who regularly designed erotic works. |

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
