Summary

Description
English: Old peat workings on Walton Heath The unusual linear pattern in this lake is a result of the way the peat was extracted. Fisons PLC, who excavated this ground, had several peat-cutting machines. The machines would go up and down the grounds in lines cutting small blocks, called mumps, as they went. The lines which were cut were known as 'heads'. The linear features in this picture are the remains of the heads after cutting had ceased and the ground was allowed to flood.

A picture of one of the peat cutting machines can be seen at http://www.ejgodwin.biz/localhistory.htm

It is now Ham Wall RSPB Reserve.
