Summary
DescriptionOadby Observatory - geograph.org.uk - 2182099.jpg |
English: Oadby Observatory, near to Oadby, Leicestershire, Great Britain.
This is the University of Leicester facility next to the sports club. The larger dome was opened in 1980 but refurbished with a brand new 20-inch piCETL TelescopeLink. Being opened by Professor Jeff Hoffman, a former NASA astronaut on the 7th December 2009. There is also a smaller dome with a smaller telescope. The observatory is used by the physics and astronomy department with undergraduate projects as well and research by professionals. The astro society (of which I am a member) has the Tuesday fortnightly spot from 8-12pm. On the less cloudy nights Jupiter (plus all 4 moons), Neptune, Uranus, Andromeda, Vega and several other sights have been viewed. Throughout the year more planets should appear like Venus, Mars and Saturn although I have already seen Mars and its methane icecaps at Seething TM3295 : Seething Observatory. |
