A new North East Regional Airport Committee was formed in April 1963, paving the way for the major developments seen in this photograph. Construction of the new terminal was completed in 1966 and officially opened by Prime Minister Harold Wilson on February 17 1967. The 1960s saw a boom in demand for foreign sunshine holidays, especially to Spain.
