Description

7th New York State Militia (part of the State Defense Forces) in 1861: Only very hesitantly were African-Americans allowed into the federal troops, and even if they were, they usually got only inferior jobs.

Description given at the source: "(...) image of 7th New York State Militia, Camp Cameron, D.C., 1861. The picture shows a boack boy shining a pair of boots belonging to one of the soldiers. The boy is likely a former slave. It was taken in 1861.
