Summary

Description
English: NSWR 1,750 hp Class 43 Co-Co No.4306 at Trainworks, the New South Wales Railway Museum, Thirlmere, 31 March 2016. 6 Class 43's were built by Goninan (Newcastle) as suncontractors to AEI (Australian Electrical Industries) in 1956-57 under license to the short-lived ALCO/General Electric partnership having an ALCO 244 V12 engine in a GE body (their design UM20). The only other railway to have the UM20 was the Erie Railroad which had just 2 cab units and two cabless boosters. The Class 43's were unreliable and were withdrawn in 1974-79. Nonetheless, they were the predecessors of much more successful ALCO products.
