Description |
Video still by Nancy Macko, from Lore of the Bee Priestess (video installation, 2004). The image illustrates a key phase and medium in Nancy Macko's art in the 2000s when she produced multidisciplinary video installations combining metaphorical, layered imagery and audio experimentation. The still image is from her video, Lore of the Bee Priestess (1992–04), a visual narrative portraying a newly awakened "bee priestess" attempting to recover the ancient power of a lost matriarchal culture that revered female creativity, nature and peace. As in this still, its imagery referenced bees, symbolic objects and locations from around the world, and rituals involving feminine archetypes such as the mother, courtesan, Amazon and psychic. This work appeared in Macko's first survey, "Hive Universe" (Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery). This body of work and individual piece were publicly exhibited in prominent exhibitions and discussed by critics in major art journals and daily press publications. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key stage and body of work in Nancy Macko's art career in the 2000s: her honeybee-focused multidisciplinary video installations, Macko combined metaphorical, layered imagery and audio experimentation. These works represented trans-historical odysseys of social and identity construction, which interwove Macko's characteristic bee imagery, symbolic objects and locations from around the world, and enacted rituals referencing feminine archetypes, often employing a fractured, kaleidoscopic effect mimicking the hexagonal honeycomb shape and multilayered soundtracks. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this key body of work, which brought Macko ongoing recognition through exhibitions and coverage by major critics and publications. Macko's work of this type and this series is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article. |
