DescriptionN 53 2789 Crosby-Garfield School (24704942221).jpg
English: Crosby-Garfield School (1878, 1881, 1910, 1920)
The East Raleigh School opened in 1878 on East Davie Street in a small frame structure. Noted African-American educator Charles N. Hunter served as headmaster. The school moved to a larger building on South Swain Street in 1881 and became known as the Garfield School.
In 1897 the Raleigh school board purchased the J.W.B. Watson property (former residence of Gov. Jonathan Worth) on East Lenoir Street and refitted the mansion as the Crosby School. The new school was named for its benefactor, Henry C. Crosby, an African-American educator associated with Shaw University.
In 1910 the old Garfield building on Swain Street was sold and a new two-story brick building erected adjacent to the Crosby School. The two schools were consolidated in 1920 as Crosby-Garfield School.
The Garfield building was damaged by fire in 1935 and repaired; the Crosby building was demolished. In 1939 the Garfield building was replaced with a modern Crosby-Garfield School designed by noted Raleigh architect William Henley Deitrick. It still stands on East Lenoir Street.
