Description
English: This is a line drawing by Henry Mosler of the death of Albert Sidney Johnston at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. The paper has been pieced together. There are smaller pieces of paper that have been glued to the sides to extend the width of the paper. The scene shows Johnston in the center of the picture leaning on his left elbow facing the viewer. His is holding a sword in his right hand. There is a solder behind him on Johnston's left with his face turned downward. He is wearing a coat and a haversack slung over his shoulder. Behind him is a soldier standing next to a tree and using it to sight his rifle which he is shooting toward the right. There are two other soldiers behind Johnston. The one on the left is leaning toward the right and he has a rifle in his hands. Behind him and directly behind Johnston is a soldier with a feather in his hat holding a spear. In the right lower corner in the foreground is the body of a dead soldier. In the background are "ghost" or shadow images of a battle scene. There is an inscription at the bottom of the drawing. It reads" See Portriat of Johnson (sic)" and "Death of Gen. A.S. Johnson (sic) at the Battle of Shiloh or Pittsburgh Landing." The drawing is signed "Henry Mosler."
